Damaged or incorrectly installed sensors leads are often the cause of instrument problems: Instruments getting a tach signal from the spark plug wire: For a Digatron instrument to work correctly the instrument must be receiving a good tach signal. Tach sensors are small antennas that pick up the energy radiated by the spark plug wire. Without a strong tach signal the instrument will give low erratic tach readings. With no tach signal, the instrument will not record for more than a few seconds and will power itself off.

Early Dodge Cummins Tach. FWIW, here are a few pictures of the factory supplied tach wiring harness used in the Dodge that I have and there is not a PCM installed on the fender. Under the dash there is what looks like an intermediate adapter cable between the under hood tach cable and the cable that leads to the tach head. I believe it may be there to pick up voltage from the wiring harness to the tach head and probably not much more.
Too wet outside to continue any further. The tach wire comes through the grommet in the firewall bottom right corner and into the back side of the plug at the center right in the picture. The opposite end of this plug which is facing you is the tach connection. I had assumed this was where the power switched leads were but instead they are attached to the same side where the sensor is connected.
Those power switched leads are the red- orange- and black. The tach leads are just to the right coming out of what looks like a piece of plastic tubing and drop out of view in the lower right corner of the picture. There is no PCM in this truck.

Mar 30, · I install a tachometer into a F
It is true that on many F ‘s that there is no wire for pin 48 and there’s not even a hole for the wire to go into. However when you take the PCM connector off you can see there is in fact a pin behind where the wire would go on the firewall male connection. BTW when take the connector off and turn it towards you you can see the holes are numbered at each end of each row. In my case the row ended in 52 so I counted back 4. There is wire for pin 47 and 49 but no hole on 48 for a wire to even go into BUT If you look where wire 48 would go if there was in fact a wire there that there is in fact a pin on the fire wall male connection.
That’s your tach pin. Trick is to get a wire on there. One option to to access PCM from passenger side inside under the dash and get to the connector from the inside of the vehicle. That did not seem like an easy job to me but if you took the time you can get at it. In my case I just drilled a hole right where the hole should be on the female pcm connector.
SOLVED: How do I hook
Only attempted on an F 4. The procedure should be similar for all F s, and possibly other years also. D-Sub Connecter Female – you need the pins: Where ever you install the tachometer isn’t part of this How-To.
May 03, · Well, I went out and dropped big bucks ($5) on a Sun Super Tach II from a guy I know. He had it in his truck for a while, but took it out a few months ago. He doesn’t remember where the wires are suppose to go.
Where do you hook up the wire on an aftermarket tachometer on an 87 jetta mark 2? I am not responsible for your actions. You need an ECU diagram of your vehicle. Find the correct pin and find the wire that attaches to it. Use a wire tap and run that wire as the signal wire to your new tach You changed a points distributor on a Chevy to a HEI do you have a diagram showing the wiring? Make sure it is a full battery voltage to the distributor. Run a wire from the battery side of the distributor labeled bat on the cap to the acc source at the fuse box.
Do not hook it up to battery power as over time the constant voltage will take out the coil.

Installation Instructions A tachometer is a good addition to any vehicle equipped with a manual transmission. Installation of the Autogage Tachometer was fairly simple with only minor wiring including a wire to the distributor, a good ground, a 12 volt switched power source and a wire to power the tach’s light. The following write-up is an overview of the installation I followed and includes a few illustrations from the installation guide provided from Autogage.
To change the tach to operate on 4 or 6 cylinder engines, a pair of dip switches are located within the tach to make the adjustment. To get to the cylinder dip switches you have to remove rear cup by placing the tachometer face down on. A phillips screw retains the cup so remove that screw located on the back.

Goldsmith Whether you have a factory, OEM tachometer or an aftermarket gauge, proper installation with the electric spark system is crucial to getting an accurate reading. Most tachometers are designed to plug directly into the coil or HEI port on most distributors. This OEM-centric paradigm is of little help to numerous hot rodders who have installed an aftermarket MSD ignition control system into their vehicles. Fortunately, most tachometers are capable of plugging directly into the MSD ignition control box with little trouble.
Strip the end of the trigger wire for the tachometer, and place a female-to-female connector to it. Run enough wire to reach the MSD ignition control box mounted on the firewall in the engine compartment.

Tagged 0 Thread s Ok I have all good new on this. Now I looked around asked questions even sent an email to Sun asking if this could be used on my bike 06 RSV they said no. Well I went ahead and found what I thought I would need to get it working and well to keep it short, 1 Purchased the tach and set the tach to the 4 cyl setting. Mount the aluminum to the front brake reservoir cover with 2 stainless screws and nuts, do not use nylon locking nuts but use standard nuts with washers I put a “O” ring around each screw unnder the washer but found it was not necessary with locktite you will see why when you go to mount it.
Check all for proper clearance by doing a dry fit. Now with the wires you will need to buy some wire wrap because the piece supplied is not long enough to hide the wires from where you mount the tach to the coils.
Tue Aug 18, 8: I got the tube ones because I thought I was going to be cutting the existing wires on my bike, then inserting them into each end of the tube, along with a tach wire into one end of the tube, and crimping it, but I guess not. Mon Aug 24, 6: I got a soldering tool and some heat shrink, and some extra connectors too, just in case.
Now for the wires Let’s talk about the black wire first, since I think it’s the easiest one.

I manage a rather large car collection, To me anyway I’m 60 years old and love these old muscle cars. However being mostly a chevy guy, Can I say “Chevy” here? I have a question about the Tach on the original Rally Pac. Car in question is a Just aquired K Code. I have never seen a Tach wired like these are, I have seen the wiring diagram and Now it is hooked up right but does not work.
The car does run though. How can a tach work being wired to the hot side of the distributor and not the distributor side? I mean, that is where the signal is! Is there a way to test the tach before I send it off to be fixed? Also where do you recommend sending it?
