First variation models are the most valuable, they have serial numbers under , and were manufactured from pre-occupation parts that were in stock at the FN factory at the time of takeover. I had been a loyal 94 follower and had tried most of the calibers and variations. Something struck me wrong about the closing of the plant and I was soon out of the Winchester ownership program. One day I heard about the new. Upon firing both, I found the chambers to be to rough and actually had fired rounds brass seize up in the chambers. Both had to have the chamber polished out!
Aug 16, · Seawolfxx, Belgium Sweet Sixteen X, Shipped, ~Fall of Euratte, A82## My records indicate that gun was shipped Spring of Those are all real nice production years for A5 16 gauge guns! Here is the Browning link to find the date of manufacture.
Posts 4, I probably should add a little to my last post lest folks get to thinking I’m disagreeing with someone. My field of study This era is primarily those guns, designed by John M. I am also interested in the to rifles and the Hi-power pistol and Superposed shotguns made there pre and post WWII, but reliable information on those earlier guns is sketchy. My primary interest is in the bolt action centerfire rifles of the to era. Brownings serial numbering system was pretty consistent during these years.
A letter was used to designate the model then a single digit was used to indicate the year of manufacture then usually a space then the serial number. L was the product code for the bolt action rifle, the Safari grade and other higher grades. T pre and C post was the product code for the 9mm Hi-power pistol. There are exceptions to all this but all Browning serial numbers I’ve seen had a product code with a couple of exceptions.
There is some debate about when Browning began manufacture of the Safari Rifle.

History[ edit ] John M. Browning, the inventor of the rifle, and Burton, the Winchester expert on rifles, discussing the finer points of the BAR at the Winchester plant The US entered World War I with an inadequate, small, and obsolete assortment of domestic and foreign machine gun designs, due primarily to bureaucratic indecision and the lack of an established military doctrine for their employment.
The arms donated by the French were often second-rate or surplus and chambered in 8mm Lebel , further complicating logistics as machine gunners and infantrymen were issued different types of ammunition. Patent 1, , was owned by Colt. Winchester gave valuable assistance in refining the BAR’s final design, correcting the drawings in preparation for mass production.
Initial M production[ edit ] 2nd Lt. Val Browning with the Browning Automatic Rifle in France Since work on the gun did not begin until February , so hurried was the schedule at Winchester to bring the BAR into full production that the first production batch of 1, guns was delivered out of spec; it was discovered that many components did not interchange between rifles, and production was temporarily halted until manufacturing procedures were upgraded to bring the weapon up to specifications.
They were in full production by June , delivering 4, guns, and from July were turning out 9, units per month. Colt and Marlin-Rockwell Corp. Marlin-Rockwell, burdened by a contract to make rifles for the Belgian government, acquired the Mayo Radiator Co. The first unit from this source was delivered on 11 June and the company’s peak output reached automatic rifles per day.

By Randy Wakeman The Browning A-5, the most important semi-automatic shotgun ever made, is likely also one of the most misunderstood shotguns, despite its year history. There is an amazing amount of misinformation and misunderstanding about what it was, what it is and what it does. Although at its best in the field, the A-5 won its fair share of National Skeet Championships in the form of the Remington Model It was not designed to be quickly completely disassembled.
The ultra-thin screws of the Belgian A-5 served as a deterrent to the would-be home gunsmith. Likely more A-5’s have been damaged by amateur smithing attempts than any other gun. The information is readily available on what to do, though. Anyone can download the field service manual from Midwest Gun Works if they are curious. You can tune into Art’s at http: While periodic field-stripping, inspection, lubrication and normal cleaning is easy enough as described in the A-5 owners manual, beyond replacement of brass friction rings and a perhaps a recoil spring, the innards of an A-5 are best left off to a professional like Art who has done thousands of them.
The notion that an A-5 kicks extra hard is wrong. Properly set-up, they are one of the softest-shooting shotguns ever made, but only if you do your homework. Rumor has it that John Browning suggested 30W motor oil to lightly lubricate the magazine tube. The first of the A-5 patents No.

Browning A5 16 gauge serial number date guide Posted: Sun Jun 09, 4: Fri May 18, South Dakota Hi Ronyahski, Thanks for your response and question. The date discrepancies are due to three factors: I now own 7 collectable to me Browning A5s. I have called the Browning historian on each to discover all I can about each gun including when the gun left the Browning factory. No factory records could be found on three. The Browning historian informed me of the dates four of my guns were sold and shipped from Browning.
I have letters on Browning letterhead on three of my guns. Of the four guns with factory records, two had serial numbers that matched the published serial number dates listed in The Book “Browning Auto-5 Shotguns” HM Shirley, Anthony Vanderlinden. One gun left Browning one year after the published serial number date. One gun left Browning two years before the published serial number date.

Authored by Staff Writer. The Model was another successful John Browning firearms design that was initially produced by the Belgian firm of Fabrique Nationale. The sidearm proved an excellent addition to the inventories of many national armies and security forces around the world. The gun went on to see action in Word War 1 and World War 2, seeing production into the early s.
This action is most often recognized as the “trigger” to the powder keg that resulted in World War 1. Master gunsmith John Browning developed his Model to improve upon his previous – and essentially his first successful – handgun attempt, the Model The Model became the first of his creations to be produced by the Belgium firm of Fabrique Nationale and featured a recoil spring fitted within a cylinder mounted above the barrel assembly, making for a unique though rather clumsy-looking gun.
However, this served the pistol well in that it kept moving parts to a minimum and forged the beginning of what would become a long-lasting and flourishing venture between Browning and FN. Up to this point, Browning leaned on both Colt Firearms and FN to produce his guns in the United States and Belgium respectively but, after Colt declined to produce his new Model , Browning took his development to FN to market the type to European interests.
The now-FN Model was offered in both. While appearing as early as , the Model was not introduced to market until , resulting in the gun sometimes being referenced as the “Model “. One major improvement of the new design over the previous Model was in the mounting of the recoil spring set around the barrel assembly, this helping to streamline the overall appearance of the gun and making for a lighter and more compact design to handle.

Posted on May 26, by bcbuck Buck, I tried it this weekend and I must agree that your method of measuring length of pull is the best. I tried an old Remington Model 11 and it actually felt too short. Imagine my surprise when its pull measured 14 inches. The gun I love the most is a Browning Superposed made in
SERIALIZATION This section has once again been expanded to help you identify the year of manufacture on many popular manufacturers and trademarks. To use these tables, compare your serial number(s) to the correct manufacturer and model, and ascertain which bracket it falls into based on the year of manufacture and corresponding serial number.
After that, the parts were produced in Belgium but the rifles themselves were assembled in Portugal. The barrel markings will make note of the change. The ‘ ’76 Belgian guns will have an ‘M’ followed by a 1 or 2 digit number code for the year of mfg in the serial number and they restarted with ser each year during that time IIRC. Not sure what they did during the later assembled guns. All were drilled and tapped at the factory for scope mounts. Mostly high grade wood used on ‘graded’ guns was affected.
It impregnated the wood with salt as the moisture was drawn out and to this day the wood will rust the metal parts of the gun as it still draws moisture back into it as any hygroscopic salt will do. For many years Browning would replace the wood on these ‘salt guns’ guns, but I don’t think they’ll do that anymore. It is salt water pitting.
